Geotechnical Engineering

Geotechnical drilling, engineering and laboratory testing is a vital predecessor to the design and construction of project. Subsurface soil, rock and ground water conditions properly identified and classified play as important a role in a project as the architectural, civil and structural design above ground. This is especially true when construction is being considered on property which may be potentially contaminated.
 
Properly performed geotechnical and drilling services can result in improved foundation design and reduced construction costs. PSI’s responsibility is to provide our clients with accurate and representative information concerning subsurface recommendations for design and construction of many types of facility or project. Our services include subsurface explorations, geotechnical studies, analysis and preparation of reports for a broad array of projects nationwide.
 
PSI maintains its own drilling fleet in many principal locations around the country, and also has laboratories, from the most basic to very sophisticated, for soil and rock classification and testing.  Our drill rigs are tooled and equipped to sample a variety of soil and rock types, and to work in often quite remote and difficult environments. These include forests, hillsides swamps and over water be it on a river or offshore.  
 
PSI engineers and technicians plan fieldwork exploration programs, laboratory testing campaigns and thereafter conduct analysis and engineering on many facets of a project. Components of a geotechnical project might include the assessment of site preparation needs, and earthworks activities, identification of applicable foundation systems, excavation support requirements, cut or fill slope stability, or pavement section design for a parking area, city street or freeway.
 
Subsurface explorations are conducted for commercial projects (offices, shops and warehouses), industrial and manufacturing plants, schools and universities, and residential developments. Also, we consult for roadways, railways, airports and bridges. Dams, water supply pipelines and other water drainage and treatment facilities are also part of our portfolio of projects.
 
PSI geotechnical engineers work for consulting engineers and architects, public and private owners alike, as well as contractors on occasion. We are often expected to join a design team or more recently a design-build team, each with differing and unique project expectations.
